 One kilometer west. Discover this one thousand year old village with Venetian prisons, doorways, arches, and a beautiful Byzantine church.  One kilometer east. Visit another typical village with Profitis Ilias Monastery, a museum and the famous Byzantine church of Virgin Mary that features a famous wall painting of the 12th century A.D.  Two kilometers north of Roustika. Agios Konstantinos is where the nobility of the city of Rethymno spent their summer holidays. Visit the ruins of summer villas, such as the most popular Villa Barozzi. In addition the very old wall paintings in the church of St. George is something else that you shouldn't miss.  Ten kilometers northwest of our resort. Argiroupolis is a village built on the ancient Minoan city of Lappa. Back in the Byzantine and Venetian periods it was a very flourishing city and played an important role to all of its neighboring villages. Remnants of ancient mosaics, Corinthian pillars and Venetian palaces can be seen in a beautiful mountain setting. Cascading mountain springs and ancient Roman burial grounds are nearby.  About the remaining parts of Rethymno and the rest of Crete you have the convenience to experience all those too since MountainVista Resort is located right in the middle of Rethymno county and between the other two major cities of Crete, Chania and Iraklio. The ancient Minoan cities of Knossos and Phaestos are very close, the excuisite Venetian cities of Rethymno and Chania are only 20 to 30 minutes away. The unique natural beauty of the Samaria Gorge is just some kilometers away. And of course all those awesome sandy beaches along with the rocky mountains of Ida where Zeus was born are some attractions that can be found nowhere else, other than the legendary island of Crete. |
